[dropcap style=”font-size: 70px; color: #052b51; font-family: ‘Droid Serif’, Arial, sans-serif;”] T [/dropcap] he weekend of the the 21st and 22nd of May was a rather eventful one sort with drama and chaos. Despite all the kafuffle, Nicola and Sunny Park Stables El Paso claimed a second place in the World Cup Qualifier held at the Equidome and continue to dominate the rider rankings as we enter the second half of the year.
The Equidome show started with Nicola having to rush to the dentist for emergency root canal! After her dentist visit she rushed back to the show to jump. Wow! It was the final day, Sunday, that really came with its own chaos.
The day started with a visit to SASCOC house to discuss the future of South African Equestrian Sport. Then Nicola jumped in her car with Aidan and rushed to the schools show where he was competing (poor Aidan had to learn his course on a phone in the car!). Aidan achieved a 2nd place in the 70cm class on Tiara and had 3 clears on Jonty in the 80s – well done!
Then back in the car with a rush back to the Equidome for the World Cup Qualifier. Nicola and El Paso jumped a quick round with only one rail down. Conn was not feeling himself and promptly unseated Nicola (we’re politely saying tossed her off) in the first round. As the second round started there was some objections and concerns raised regarding the original schedule (which said only 25% of the class would go through to the second round) and a few other riders on 4 faults objecting and wanting to jump. The stewards allowed everyone to jump and the agreement was that confirmation from the FEI would determine final results.
FINALLY, after a few days the FEI came back to confirm that Nicola and El Paso had finished in a well deserved 2nd place! It was a long and busy weekend but just goes to show that top riding requires a level head that is able to stay cool under pressure. Well done Nicola!
