[dropcap style=”font-size: 70px; color: #052b51; font-family: ‘Droid Serif’, Arial, sans-serif;”] T [/dropcap] here is one word that strikes fear in to the hearts of horse owners everywhere “colic”. While we try our best to ensure happy horses and good tummies, sometimes colics do happen. Many times we cannot even explain why! We have a strict procedure when it comes to handling colic at Sunny Park – specifically for horses insured.
This is just a reminder of our procedure when handling colic symptoms in horses:
- Give a Finadyne injection and observe the horse for an hour;
- If the horse/pony starts to graze after 10 minutes then we will allow grazing to continue in the grass arena until 6ish;
- The horse/pony will be put into a stable next to a grooms room and will be monitored until 11:30pm and the client will be charged overtime;
- If there is no improvement after an hour or during the evening then we will inform the owner that the animal needs to be taken to a clinic in Midrand;
- The client must inform their insurance company immediately and they will discuss issues/options with the veterinary surgeon on call.
- Agreement between Kuda and Sunny Park is that Nicola can administer pain prevention medication during this period.
Kuda will be issuing cards to all horse owners which are insured with them within the next couple of months with instructions/information.
