Shongweni World Cup Qualifier – Durban trip

[dropcap style=”font-size: 70px; color: #052b51; font-family: ‘Droid Serif’, Arial, sans-serif;”] W [/dropcap] hat a great show we had down in Durban! A stack of fun was had by everyone who came along. From the riders (Nicola, Michelle, Marlein, Jason, Katie and Sam Wright) to the supporters (Lana, Almero, Ruan, Gavin, Natalie, Donna, Bernadine and Jan) – it was a lovely Sunny Park week away! Nicola also did extremely well in both the World Cup Qualifier and Rider’s Tour Grand Prix.

She finished 4th on El Paso and 5th on Conn in the Grand Prix, which was held on the Saturday.

However, the big class – the Nissan FEI World Cup Qualifier – was held on the Monday and this is really where Nicola showed her skill as a rider.

In round 1 she jumped clear on El. This makes her the only rider to jump a clear in round one in two qualifiers. This also happens to be part of the criteria for qualification for the 2014 World Equestrian Games. Exciting stuff!

Unluckily, Conn had a foot in the water and so incurred 4 penalties in round 1.

Going into round 2 there were only 3 clears – Johan Kachelhoffer and Capital Shiraz, Dion Boardman and (horse) and of course Nicola.

Nicola jumped a lovely clear on Conn. She was the last to go on El, Johan and Shiraz had jumped a double clear. Anne-Marie Esslinger was lying second with a fast round with 4 faults over the two rounds.

Unfortunately, despite clocking a good time, Nicola and El had jump one down. This meant she ended on 4 penalties. However it was still good enough for a podium finish!

Well done Nicola!
